可以在選秀會第一輪就被義大犀牛選中，超乎黃勝雄的預期，農曆春節快到了，黃勝雄10日說「要包個像『紅磚』那麼厚的紅包給阿嬤」。

黃勝雄22歲，左投，就讀台東農工時，球速最快在138公里左右，還不是名很顯眼的投手，進入嘉藥科大就讀，大二、大三時因體重增重，球速突飛猛進，飆破150公里，從此之後，他成了相當受到期待的左投。

黃勝雄10日說「高中時，自己並不突出」，高中畢業後，黃勝雄的阿嬤要他作選擇，「打球或讀軍校」，黃勝雄說「阿嬤是希望我至少可以做好一件事」，經過溝通之後，黃勝雄選擇繼續打球，而阿嬤叮嚀的「至少做好一件事」，他一直謹記在心。

去年底報名參加中職選秀，由於有許多旅外球員報名參加，黃勝雄原預估自己會在第三輪才被選中，他萬萬沒想到第一輪就被義大犀牛挑走，這個結果，出乎他意料之外。
